Saudi Arabia will deposit its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol on July 8, 2026, and will officially become a member of the Madrid System on October 8, 2026. As the largest economy in the Middle East and a member of the G20, Saudi Arabia's accession represents one of the most significant developments in international trademark protection in recent years. This also means that five out of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have now joined the Madrid System, further strengthening trademark protection across the region.

The Madrid System enables businesses to secure trademark protection in multiple jurisdictions through a single international application, eliminating the need to file separate national applications in each country. For global trademark owners, Saudi Arabia can now be designated in an international registration; meanwhile, Saudi enterprises can obtain protection in over 130 countries through a streamlined, one-stop application.

The benefits extend far beyond mere convenience. International applicants can reduce administrative burdens, bypass many upfront authentication requirements, and simplify the management of their global trademark portfolios. Simultaneously, Saudi companies—particularly startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—can expand their international footprint with greater efficiency and lower costs.

This milestone also reflects Saudi Arabia's ongoing commitment under its "Vision 2030" framework to strengthen its intellectual property ecosystem, thereby fostering a more attractive environment for innovation, investment, and international trade.

Although the Madrid System streamlines the filing procedure, local examination standards, opposition proceedings, and Saudi-specific legal requirements remain vital considerations.
