On 9 April 2025, Montenegro formally deposited its instrument of accession to the London Agreement, with the aim of reducing translation costs for European patents. Under Article 6(2) of the Agreement, Montenegro became the 23rd contracting party, and the Agreement will take effect for Montenegro from 1 August 2025.
Pursuant to Article 65(1) of the European Patent Convention (EPC), for European patents (designating Montenegro) that take effect on or after 1 August 2025, if the patent is granted in English or an English translation is provided, no translation of the patent specification into Montenegrin will be required. However, a Montenegrin translation of the claims must always be provided.
For users who validate their European patents via the Unitary Patent system, a similar mechanism applies that can significantly reduce translation costs.
