Recently, Uganda’s Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, in collaboration with key partners, launched a guide on Intellectual Property (IP) for the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. The initiative aims to protect innovations and commercialization efforts in Uganda’s rapidly growing tech industry. The guide was developed under the UJ-Connect project and supported by institutions including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Ministry of Justice, and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). Together, these entities provide a comprehensive framework for managing, owning, and monetizing IP assets in the country.

    The guide is designed to encourage innovation, promote best practices, protect intellectual property, and support the commercialization of creative outputs, with the ultimate goal of driving economic growth. During a promotional workshop, Moses Watasa emphasized the need for cross-sector integration of ICT and called for a strong legal framework in Uganda to prevent intellectual property infringements. He noted that the guide offers a clear pathway for innovators—especially those developing ICT solutions for government and public use—to protect their creations and unlock their economic potential.

    To ensure effective implementation of the guide, the Ministry will organize a series of nationwide workshops to equip innovators with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate IP both legally and commercially. Additionally, the Ministry plans to leverage radio, television, and digital platforms to broaden outreach. The launch of this guide is expected to foster a thriving innovation ecosystem, accelerate Uganda’s digital transformation, and contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth.
