Trademark Applications in 2013 Exceeding 1.88mln

As of the end of 2013, China saw its trademark applications totaling 13,241,337 with 1,881,546 newly filed last year, up 14.15% on a year-on-year basis, according to statistics of the trademark department under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

The nation has gained considerable momentum of filing trademark applications since 2010 with 1.072 million in 2010, 1.417 million in 2011, 1.648 million in 2012 and 1.882 million in 2013, hitting a historical high record.

By the end of last year, trademark registrations in China have accumulated to 8,652,358, increasing from 7.656 million in 2012, meanwhile registered trademarks in force have amounted to 7,237,894, up from 6.4 million.

Statistics also show that applications of trademark opposition in 2013 reached 34,667, declining by 4.58% compared with that in 2012.

With an increasing demand for protecting trademarks, the SAIC has exerted efforts in improving service level by creating new service tools including r.gbicom.cn, an electronic platform which enables local and foreign filers to make inquiries and submit applications online. Meanwhile, the authority has taken a series of measures to improve the quality and efficiency of trademark examination processes. In 2013 alone, the trademark department reviewed as many as 1.425 million marks, up 16.09%.
