World Intellectual Property Day was established by World Intellectual Property Organization in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe". The annual celebration held on April 26 is marked by many realted organizations and individuals which hold lectures, presentations, and other events to promote the awareness about intellectual property in everyday life. Each year, WIPO selects a specific theme which is celebrated within the IP field. This year, in stride with the global trend of empowering women, was "Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity".
