Malaysia Rolls Out Measures to Lower Trademark Fees for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises
date: 2025-10-10

In conjunction with the 2025 National Day and Malaysia Day (HKHM 2025) celebrations, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) announced a series of initiatives to support local businesses and consumers. The most eye-catching measure is a substantial reduction in trademark registration fees introduced by the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), an agency under KPDN.

KPDN Minister Armizan Mohd Ali recently unveiled these measures, stating that they reflect the Malaysian government’s commitment to promoting national prosperity and unity.

The main measures include:

Trademark Registration Fee Reduction Scheme: With the theme “Protect Local Brands, Expand to Global Markets,” the scheme aims to encourage micro, small and medium enterprises to protect their intellectual property.

Details: A reduction of RM300 (US$71) per application, lowering the fee from RM950 (US$225) to RM650 (US$154).

Implementation period: A four-month promotional window from September 1 to December 31, 2025.

Eligible applicants: Individuals, business entities, associations and organizations.

Goal: Given that 96.1% of Malaysia’s business entities are micro, small and medium enterprises, this move seeks to enhance the competitiveness of local brands.

Shopee Platform Consumer Campaign: KPDN is partnering with Shopee to deliver benefits directly to consumers.

Campaign name: “Shopee Payung RM100 Campaign.”

Offer: Consumers pay only RM1 (about US$0.4) to purchase a universal voucher worth RM100 (about US$24), usable across the entire Shopee platform (including ShopeeFood and Shopee Live).

Campaign period: August 31 to September 16, 2025.

Scale: A total budget of RM10 million (US$2.37 million), expected to benefit 100,000 users. Shopee will also offer free delivery during the campaign.

As another agency under KPDN, the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) launched the Ezbiz On-The-Go 2.0 mobile service bus. This upgraded mobile service vehicle is designed to provide the public with a faster and more comfortable SSM service experience. Upgrades include a larger bus capacity, modernized counter services, and self-service touchscreen terminals.

Ali said: “These initiatives reflect our commitment to supporting the people of Malaysia, and they also recognize the unity of all Malaysians of all ethnicities in building a more peaceful and more prosperous nation.”
